Hashirii Rice Cake

Hashirii Rice Cake에 대해

Hashirii Rice Cake (走り井餅, Hashirii Mochi) is a beloved delicacy from Oiwake, a bustling hub where travelers on the Tokaido Road once gathered at the gates of the ancient capital of Kyoto. The area was lined with teahouses offering respite to weary travelers.

First created in 1764 (Meiwa 1), during the era of the 10th Shogun Tokugawa Ieharu, this rice cake is made using the pristine waters of Hashirii and the finest Omi rice. It served as a source of nourishment and vital energy for travelers, who sipped tea brewed with Hashirii's fresh spring water to quench their thirst and revive their spirits during their journeys. The unique shape of the Hashirii Rice Cake represents the abundant, flowing streams and cascading droplets of water, a design that has made it a renowned and iconic souvenir along the Tokaido for centuries.
