No Manju
A century-loved tradition: Shuri's iconic "No Manju"
About No Manju
No Manju (のまんじゅう, No manju) is a special steamed bun with a white outer layer and the character "の" (no) elegantly written in red food dye. The "の" symbolizes "nosh," a traditional Japanese good-luck charm, making this sweet a cherished item for auspicious occasions.
Inside the bun is a unique combination of flavors: the subtle fragrance of shell ginger leaves, used to wrap the manju, and a mildly sweet red bean paste filling. Even those who aren't fans of overly sweet treats can enjoy its light, refreshing sweetness.
Originating from the Gibo Manju shop in the Shuri Gibo area of Naha City, this delicacy is also referred to as the original "No Manju." At the time of purchase, customers are often asked, "Would you like the 'の' written?" If you say yes, you'll get to experience the delightful moment of having the "の" character drawn right before your eyes.
