Karatsu Q-Saba
Fully farm-raised mackerel
About Karatsu Q-Saba
Karatsu Q-Saba (唐津Qサバ, Karatsu Q-Saba) is a farm-raised mackerel developed through a joint research initiative between Kyushu University and Karatsu City in Saga Prefecture. It is produced using advanced full-cycle aquaculture techniques, starting from artificially hatched larvae, grown into juveniles and then full-grown fish, which are then used to collect eggs for artificial hatching.
The name "Q-Saba" was chosen in June 2016 through a public contest with almost 1,200 submissions. It incorporates "Q" from Kyushu University’s name, "Quality," and even "Question," inviting diners to enjoy conversations sparked by this unique mackerel. Only mackerel weighing 400 grams or more are shipped under the Karatsu Q-Saba label.
Q-Saba stands out with its reduced risk of parasitic anisakis due to being fully farm-raised, and it boasts a consistently high fat content year-round compared to wild mackerel.
