Kankoro Mochi introduction

Kankoro Mochi (かんころ餅, Kankoro mochi) is a specialty of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The term “kankoro” comes from the local dialect, referring to thinly sliced sweet potatoes that are sun-dried. This mochi is made by mixing kankoro with glutinous rice, resulting in a uniquely flavorful treat. In the past, glutinous rice was a luxury item, so mixing it with kankoro allowed families to make more and share generously—a testament to the resourcefulness of the people in the region. Even today, kankoro mochi is still homemade in many households as a traditional preserved food during the winter in the Goto area.
