About Nyuko Zenzai

Nyuko Zenzai (入港ぜんざい, Nyuko zenzai) has its roots tracing back to the old Imperial Japanese Navy era. It was said to be a sweet treat symbolizing both gratitude for enduring long voyages and the joy of returning home to family.

Made with sweet red bean paste, a rare luxury at the time due to the high value of sugar, this dish was considered quite special. The zenzai represents a way to relieve fatigue and celebrates the safe return of sailors. This meaningful custom is partially carried on by the modern Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Typically, it includes comforting elements like chewy mochi, soft shiratama rice cakes, and even taiyaki pastries, making it a delightful treat steeped in history.
