Oyster rice
About Oyster rice
Mie Prefecture's local dish “oyster rice” is a flavourful dish made by cooking fresh oysters grown in Ise Bay with locally grown rice. This dish is said to have started when fishermen cooked freshly picked oysters on a boat and tasted them as rice. Today, it is popular at home and in restaurants as a winter flavor.
Ise Bay is an area rich in nutrients, and oysters grown there are characterized by their rich umami and creamy texture. The rice used is Iga rice, Koshihikari, etc. from Mie prefecture, which absorbs plenty of oyster broth and cooks plump. Locally produced soy sauce and mirin are used as seasonings to enhance the flavor of the ingredients.
In terms of nutrition, oysters are rich in iron, zinc, vitamin B12, etc., and are expected to be effective in improving immunity and recovering from fatigue. Rice is an energy source as a staple food and provides well-balanced meals.
In Mie Prefecture, events and fairs where you can enjoy oyster cuisine during the winter are held in various places, and it is popular among tourists. Especially in the Ise-Shima area, there are many oyster huts where you can enjoy all-you-can-eat oysters, and cafeterias that offer oyster set meals and course meals.
When visiting Ise, be sure to enjoy fresh oyster dishes.
