Akaten
A spicy bite that brings a taste of Shimane to life. Crispy and grilled, each slice tells a story of local passion.
About Akaten
Akaten (赤天, Akaten) is a soul food of Hamada City and one of Shimane Prefecture's iconic specialties, originally developed during the post-war era of food shortages.
Its vivid red interior and mildly spicy flavor, achieved with red chili peppers, make it unique. Akaten is a type of kamaboko (fish cake) coated in breadcrumbs and fried to golden perfection. Locals enjoy it grilled and paired with mayonnaise, and it is a staple in supermarkets and izakayas across Shimane. Its fame has even reached famous establishments in Tokyo. Only a few manufacturers, like Yamamoto Kamaboko-ten and Yamabun Kamaboko-ten, are authorized to produce this delicacy. Not only delicious, Akaten is also nutritious, making it a recommended addition to a balanced diet.
