About Sukiyaki

Sukiyaki (すき焼き, Sukiyaki) allows you to enjoy the best of Gunma Prefecture’s renowned agricultural and livestock products.

Gunma boasts a rich variety of local specialties, including "Joshu Beef," the first Japanese beef exported to the EU, and the tender, thick "Shimonita Negi" green onions grown in Kanra District's Shimonita Town. Sukiyaki here is made exclusively with local ingredients, achieving a perfect 100% self-sufficiency rate. It features Joshu Beef and Shimonita Negi as its stars, complemented by shirataki noodles made from Gunma's konjac potatoes, which are number one in national production. Additionally, the dish incorporates other fresh veggies such as cabbage, chrysanthemum greens, and shiitake mushrooms, all of which rank among the top five in Japan for production volume (according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for 2020).

In recent years, sukiyaki has also inspired engaging local events, such as the "Gunma Sukiyaki Bento Contest" that invites innovative ideas for sukiyaki-inspired bento lunchboxes and the "Family Sukiyaki Photo Contest" celebrating cherished moments of families enjoying sukiyaki together. These activities help weave sukiyaki deeper into the culture of the region, making it a significant culinary tradition.
