About Takezaki Crab

Takezaki Crab (竹崎カニ, Takezaki kani) is a celebrated specialty of Tara Town. While the species is commonly known nationwide as “blue crab,” those caught in the coastal waters near Takezaki in Tara Town are uniquely referred to as Takezaki Crab and are highly prized.

The Ariake Sea, with its vast tidal flats formed by significant tidal changes, creates the perfect environment for a rich ecosystem. The plankton and small marine creatures living in these tidal flats are exposed to sunlight during low tide, absorbing plenty of infrared energy that enhances their flavor. These creatures become ideal food for Takezaki Crab, contributing to its extraordinary taste.

Takezaki Crab has two peak seasons: in winter, when the females carry nutrient-rich eggs in preparation for spawning, and in summer, when the males are prized for their rich and flavorful crab miso. While simply boiling them in salted water is a popular way to enjoy their delicious flavor, they’re also fantastic as sashimi, grilled, or even in tempura dishes.
