Shoro Manju
Delicately sweet red bean paste wrapped in thin castella dough and baked to perfection
About Shoro Manju
Shoro Manju (松露饅頭, Shoro manju) is one of the iconic sweets of Karatsu. It is said to be named after its resemblance to the shape of "shoro," a type of mushroom that grows naturally in the pine forests of Karatsu's Niji-no-Matsubara area.
This elegant treat features smooth red bean paste (koshi-an) encased in a thin, fluffy castella-like dough made from a blend of wheat flour, sugar, and eggs. Each manju is carefully crafted into a bite-sized, perfectly round shape with a diameter of about 2.5 cm—a charming and petite size.
With its light sweetness, Shoro Manju is a delightful dessert that even those who prefer less sugary treats can enjoy.
