About Sanbai Mochi
Sanbai Mochi (三杯もち, Sanbai mochi) is a traditional sweet rice cake enjoyed mainly in the Omagari and Semboku regions of southern Akita Prefecture.
Its name, which loosely translates to "three cup mochi," originates from the preparation method where rice flour, wheat flour, and shiratama rice flour were each measured as one cup from a teacup and mixed together with sweet red bean paste. This naming reflects the ingenious methods of the past, long before modern measuring tools became common. Made using locally grown Akita rice and carefully kneaded, steamed, and combined with sweet red bean paste, Sanbai Mochi has a delightfully unique texture that stands out.
