Japanese Spider Crab
The giant of the seas with long legs, dubbed a living fossil
About Japanese Spider Crab
The Japanese Spider Crab (タカアシガニ, Takaashigani) is the largest crab in the world, living at depths of 200 to 500 meters in Suruga Bay, and is a specialty of Numazu City's Heda area.
With its legs outstretched, it can measure over 3 meters in length! Boiled whole with its long legs folded in, this majestic crab is a spectacular sight. Despite its enormous size, its meat is surprisingly delicate, tender, and juicy, with a light, subtle sweetness.
The rich, flavorful crab tomalley from a steamed Japanese Spider Crab is an exceptional delicacy. It is also delicious when grilled, prepared as tempura, or used in rice porridge.
Shizuoka Prefecture holds the top spot in Japan for the largest catch of Japanese Spider Crabs.
