Umegae Mochi
The iconic treat of Dazaifu
Umegae Mochi introduction
Umegae Mochi (梅ヶ枝餅, Umegae mochi) is a delightful snack made with a thin, chewy rice flour shell that is grilled to a crispy perfection. Inside, you'll find sweet red bean paste made from premium Tokachi red beans, cooked until soft and flavorful. The filling is enhanced with "Kenjo Ganen," a special salt from Amakusa known for its auspicious nature, which subtly elevates the sweetness. This treat is loved for its toasty aroma and satisfying chewy texture. Despite its name, Umegae Mochi does not have a plum flavor. The name comes from the plum blossom crest of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, and each mochi is stamped with a plum blossom design on its surface to honor this connection.
