Pawpaw is an Okinawan confectionery made by dissolving wheat flour in an appropriate amount of water, baked in a flat pan such as a frying pan, coated with oil miso, and rolled into a stick shape. Mixing brown sugar in dough and baking it is often also called “chinpin”. In Okinawa in the old days, there was a custom of making pawpaw and offering it on “yukkanuhi” (May 4 of the lunar calendar) in hopes of the healthy growth of children. It is a simple and common light meal, but today it is sometimes served on the Tōdo Bon as one of the traditional Okinawan dishes.
