Yangome
The sweet and savory heart of Chiba, a lucky charm to welcome good harvests and ancestorsYangome introduction
“Yangome” is a heartwarming local dish handed down in the Boso Peninsula region in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture. This dish, made by cooking savory roasted rice and adzuki beans with sugar, looks similar to sekihan, but it is characterized by the crunchy texture and slight sweetness unique to roasted rice. On special days to pray for Obon or a good harvest, families gather around Yangome and hold a welcome fire and okuribi ceremony where they chant “eat rice, only water, welcome with this light” with their thoughts for their ancestors. The custom of offering rice and water to a straw fire is proof of love and respect for the deceased handed down from family to family. The birth of yangome began with effective use of rice left over at the end of rice planting. It is now popular as a delicious dish rooted in the Chiba region, which is essential for special events and celebrations. “Yangome,” the flavor of Boso, where aroma and sweetness interweave, continues to convey the rich heart of Chiba to the present.
