Wappa Meshi
A beloved local dish from Niigata
About Wappa Meshi
Wappa Meshi (わっぱ飯) is a traditional dish from Niigata Prefecture.
The name "wappa" refers to a lunch box made of thin, curved cedar wood. This dish is prepared by placing lightly seasoned rice, cooked with a delicate broth, into the wooden wappa box, topping it with seasonal seafood, and then steaming it. Common toppings include salmon and ikura (salmon roe).
Unlike mixed rice dishes, Wappa Meshi has a lighter taste, allowing you to fully appreciate the natural flavors of the ingredients.
