Po-po (Traditional Okinawan Sweet)
A simple yet delightful traditional sweet from Okinawa
About Po-po (Traditional Okinawan Sweet)
Po-po (ポーポー) is a traditional sweet snack from Okinawa, made by mixing wheat flour with water, cooking it on a flat pan, spreading it with oil-miso paste, and rolling it into a cylindrical shape.
When the batter is flavored with brown sugar, the dish is often referred to as "Chinbin" (ちんびん).
In the past, Okinawan families would prepare Po-po on "Yukkanuhi" (the 4th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar) as an offering, wishing for the health and growth of their children.
While Po-po is a humble and rustic treat, it is also recognized as a part of Okinawa's traditional cuisine and is occasionally served as part of a "Toudoubon" (a tray of ceremonial Okinawan dishes).
