About abalone

The reef area centered around Ise-Shima, known as the “Abalone Kingdom,” and the Toba-Shima region famous for its rias-style coast, is one of the best fishing grounds in Japan, where seaweed such as the kelp family, which feeds on abalone, thrives. Thick abalone, which grows by eating abundant plankton, lives on this intricately intertwined coast, and diver fishing is carried out.
There are 3 types of abalone caught in the prefecture: black abalone, giant abalone, and red abalone. The number of divers who catch abalone in Mie prefecture is about 1,000, which is the highest in Japan. Ironed abalone is dedicated to Ise-jingu Shrine every year, making it one of the prefecture's representative fishery products, and it has been certified as a Mie brand.
When fresh abalone is grilled over charcoal, the scent of the sea immediately comes to light. The jittering sound is also appetizing. If you chew on the thick, crunchy meat, your mouth will immediately fill your mouth with the juicy umami and flavor.
Be sure to try abalone while sightseeing in Ise-Shima.
