Botan Nabe
A Winter Tradition in Oi Town, Fukui – Botan Nabe

About Botan Nabe
Botan Nabe (ぼたん鍋) is a hearty hot pot dish made by simmering wild boar meat and vegetables in a savory miso-based broth.
Its name is said to come from the way the thinly sliced wild boar meat is arranged to resemble blooming peony flowers. While the appearance is somewhat similar to pork, wild boar meat stands out for its lack of gaminess and its rich, slightly sweet flavor profile.
In the Natasho region, Botan Nabe is typically enjoyed as a miso-based hot pot, though the flavor varies depending on the restaurant. Trying different variations to find your favorite is part of the experience.
This seasonal dish is available from mid-November through March each year, aligning with the wild boar hunting seasons for traps and firearms. It embodies the essence of winter cuisine in the region.
