About Awa wasanbon sugar

Wasanbon sugar is one of the few domestically produced sugars that are produced traditionally even now without much use of machines, etc. using sugar corn called “bamboo sugar” (commonly known as fine sugar), which is a native variety that is still cultivated today in Tokushima and Kagawa prefectures, as a raw material.
Since wasanbon is produced in Tokushima prefecture, which is Awa province, it is called Awa wasanbon sugar.
After the war, as cheap refined sugar from foreign sources was imported, the number of producers declined, and now it is mainly used as sugar for Japanese confectionery.
Its simple, high-quality flavor complements the flavor of the sweets.
