Iki Sea Urchin Rice Bowl
A must-try delicacy praised by locals—don't miss this sea urchin rice bowl on your Iki Island trip!
About Iki Sea Urchin Rice Bowl
Iki Sea Urchin Rice Bowl (壱岐うに丼, Iki Uni Don) showcases the rich flavors of fresh sea urchins, a renowned delicacy from Iki Island, a remote island in Nagasaki Prefecture celebrated for its unspoiled natural beauty.
The island's rugged coastline and pristine environment nurture some of the most flavorful and richly textured sea urchins. Iki Island mainly harvests three types of sea urchins: the classic Purple Sea Urchin (Murasaki Uni), the commonly sought-after Short-Spined Sea Urchin (Gazuni), and the rare Red Sea Urchin (Aka Uni), often referred to as a "phantom delicacy."
Fishing season for sea urchins runs from mid-April to mid-October, with over 300 local divers, known as ama (female divers) and amashi (male divers), dedicated to their harvest. The peak season for Purple Sea Urchins is typically mid-April to around June 20, while Red Sea Urchins are best enjoyed from July through October.
