Sanjo Curry Ramen
One of Niigata's Top 5 Ramen Varieties: Sanjo Curry Ramen
About Sanjo Curry Ramen
Sanjo Curry Ramen (三条カレーラーメン, Sanjo karee ramen) boasts a history spanning over 70 years, and today, more than 70 restaurants in Sanjo City serve this iconic dish.
It’s said that a restaurant in Sanjo City called "Daikokutei" is the birthplace of curry ramen. The first-generation owner of the establishment was reportedly inspired by curry he encountered while working at a restaurant in Tokyo before World War II.
The flavors and styles of curry ramen differ from one shop to another: from soup-based varieties to curry poured over noodles, dipping styles, chilled versions, and even those enriched with back fat. Each restaurant offers its own unique twist, so be sure to try them all and discover your favorite!
