Momiji Manju
Hiroshima's iconic sweet shaped like the maple leaf, the prefectural flower and tree
About Momiji Manju
Momiji Manju (もみじ饅頭) is a traditional Japanese confection with a soft and fluffy castella cake exterior made from eggs and wheat flour, filled with sweet red bean paste. Its distinct feature is its maple leaf shape, inspired by Hiroshima Prefecture's official flower and tree, the maple.
While firmly rooted in tradition, Momiji Manju has evolved over the years to incorporate a variety of flavors. Since 1984, modern variations have emerged with fillings such as cream cheese, chocolate, and custard. Unique innovations include batter blended with matcha (green tea), bamboo charcoal, or sake, along with deep-fried Momiji Manju that offer a delightful twist.
The delicately sweet and light flavor of these treats makes them enjoyable not only for Japanese people but also for visitors from around the world, earning Momiji Manju widespread popularity.
