About Tsukishima Monjayaki
Tsukishima Monjayaki (月島もんじゃ, Monjayaki) is a unique dish with an interesting origin: its name is said to come from writing characters with the batter on a hot griddle (“moji-yaki,” meaning “character grill”). This Tokyo specialty is made by mixing wheat flour with water to create a thin batter, then pouring and cooking it on a heated iron plate.
Compared to okonomiyaki, Monjayaki uses less flour, and ingredients like sauce are mixed directly into the batter, giving it a soft, gooey texture that doesn’t harden on the griddle. You enjoy it directly off the grill using a small spatula. In Tsukishima, there's even a "Monja Street" where you can discover and savor a variety of Monjayaki dishes!
