Yudemochi
Chewy texture and satisfyingly filling
About Yudemochi
Yudemochi (ゆでもち, Yudemochi) is a traditional sweet from Oita Prefecture, which has a rich history of wheat-based cuisine. In the past, many areas in Oita had poor water drainage, making rice farming less suitable, and as a result, wheat cultivation flourished. This led to the development of a diverse flour-based food culture across the region.
Yudemochi is one such delicacy made with wheat flour, alongside other traditional treats like "Ishigaki-mochi," "Jiriyaki," and "Yaseuma." These were often enjoyed as snacks for children or light meals (known as "kobiru") during farming breaks.
The standout feature of Yudemochi is its unique appearance. It is rolled out into a thin, flat, and disk-shaped form, which is rare even across Japan. The dough is so thin that the sweet filling inside is slightly visible. This thinness allows for quicker cooking, saving time and making it an ideal snack during busy moments like farm work. Its pleasantly chewy texture and convenience have made it a beloved treat in Oita for generations.
