Wakayama Whale Cuisine
Delicacy of Wakayama, traditional whale dishes
เกี่ยวกับ Wakayama Whale Cuisine
Whale Cuisine (和歌山 くじら, Wakayama Kujira) is a specialty of Taiji Town in Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, known as the birthplace of whaling in Japan.
Due to strict government regulations and capture limits on commercial whaling, whale meat is an incredibly rare and valuable ingredient. It is highly nutritious with low fat and high protein content, making it a sought-after culinary choice. You can enjoy a variety of whale dishes such as sashimi, Tatsuta-age (deep-fried whale meat), and Harihari Nabe (hot pot with whale and vegetables).
Among these, Tatsuta-age is particularly celebrated as a classic local dish representing Wakayama’s rich food culture.
