Genji Maki introduction
Genji Maki (源氏巻, Genji maki) is a traditional Japanese confectionery made by rolling smooth red bean paste in a 1.5cm-thick wheat flour dough. It was created by a Tsuwano confectioner at the end of the Edo era and is said to be named after a poem from “The Tale of Genji.” Another story suggests its origin lies in a sweet presented by a Tsuwano clan retainer to a historical figure during the Genroku period. Today, Genji Maki is one of Tsuwano's most iconic souvenirs. Made using locally grown azuki beans and Fukuoka wheat, this treat has become a beloved gift for both locals and visitors alike. With over ten manufacturers in Tsuwano, each offering unique variations such as matcha-flavored rolls or fried Genji Maki, this delicacy continues to showcase the town’s rich tradition and creativity.
