Firefly Squid with Vinegar Miso introduction

Firefly Squid with Vinegar Miso (ほたるいかの酢味噌和え, Hotaru-ika no Sumiso Ae) is a quintessential spring dish from Toyama Prefecture. Firefly squid typically live in deep waters but are drawn to the Toyama Bay coastline around March for spawning. They are harvested during a specific, short season each year. Known as the "Mystery of Toyama Bay," these tiny squid emit a bioluminescent blue glow, and the sight of them drifting in clusters near the shore is nothing short of magical. This natural phenomenon, called the "Firefly Squid Swarming Surface," is recognized as a National Natural Monument of Japan. The fishing season begins in March and continues until around June, making spring to early summer the best time to enjoy this seasonal delicacy. As a harbinger of spring in Toyama, it graces family tables almost weekly in coastal fishing towns during this period. Often garnished with chives or young green onions for a touch of color, it’s perfect for entertaining guests. Its savory and tangy flavors also make it an excellent accompaniment to sake, making it a beloved sake snack as well.
