Wakayama Whale Cuisine
Traditional whale dishes, a specialty of Wakayama
Wakayama Whale Cuisine introduction
Wakayama's Taiji Town in Higashimuro District is known as the birthplace of whaling in Japan. Whale meat, due to strict government regulations and limited permitted catches, is considered a rare and valuable ingredient. Whale meat is rich in nutrients, offering low fat and high protein content. It is a versatile ingredient used in various dishes such as sashimi, Tatsuta-age (deep-fried bite-sized pieces), and Harihari-nabe (a hot pot with a refreshing broth). Among these, "Tatsuta-age" (deep-fried whale) stands out as one of Wakayama's most celebrated regional specialties.
