About Muroran Curry Ramen

Muroran Curry Ramen (室蘭カレーラーメン, Muroran kare-ramen) is a beloved local ramen from Muroran City in Hokkaido. This dish is known for its rich, spicy curry-flavored soup and chewy, wavy noodles, a hallmark of Hokkaido’s ramen. The toppings, such as tender char siu pork, vegetables, and seaweed, harmonize perfectly with the delicious curry broth.

Originally created in Tomakomai City during the 1960s, it later found its home in Muroran City, where it gained a dedicated following. Over the decades, it has become a favorite of locals, with about 60% of Muroran's ramen shops serving this iconic dish. Each restaurant offers its own unique take, featuring various soup flavors and toppings, allowing visitors to savor diverse versions of this comforting classic.

In 2006, the "Muroran Curry Ramen Association" was formed to promote it as "the fourth flavor of Hokkaido ramen," following the renowned miso of Sapporo, soy sauce of Asahikawa, and salt of Hakodate. Today, it has earned a distinguished reputation not only as a signature dish of Muroran but also as a must-try meal for travelers exploring the region.

The soup is typically a thick and flavorful pork bone broth blended with curry paste, offering a bold and satisfying taste. At some restaurants, you can even customize the spiciness to your preference. A popular way to enjoy this dish is to pair it with a bowl of rice, using the leftover curry-infused soup to savor every last drop of flavor.
