About Mikan Nabe (Citrus Hot Pot)

Mikan Nabe (みかん鍋, Mikan Hot Pot) is a unique local dish combining the fresh seafood and the famous mandarin oranges (mikan) of Suo-Oshima, an island that produces 80% of Yamaguchi Prefecture’s mikan.

This inventive dish was first introduced on October 15, 2006, during the "Suo-Oshima Marukajiri" event, a collaborative project by the Suo-Oshima Tourism Association and the local agricultural cooperative. Suo-Oshima benefits from a warm climate, ideal for cultivating mikan, which inspired the creation of this citrus-infused hot pot. After much experimentation, the idea of adding roasted mikan to the pot was born.

The Suo-Oshima Tourism Association defines Mikan Nabe with the following four essential features:
1. Fragrant roasted mikan with edible peels, nicknamed "Nabe Bugyo Approved Mikan"
- Small mikan are roasted whole in the oven and used in the pot without peeling, allowing their natural aroma to shine.
- Mikan specifically grown for nabe on Suo-Oshima come stamped with the "Nabe Bugyo Approved" seal.
2. Fresh local fish turned into flavorful citrus-infused fish cakes.
3. A zesty condiment called "mikan kosho," made by blending green chili peppers and mikan peel, offering a pleasantly spicy kick.
4. To finish, a luxurious mikan zōsui (citrus rice porridge) topped with fluffy meringue for a satisfying and unique ending.

The tangy and mildly spicy mikan kosho adds an unforgettable twist, while the soft and creamy mikan zōsui leaves a lasting impression of deliciousness. Every bite of this dish brims with creativity and the rich flavors of Suo-Oshima!
