Sailor’s Jabujabu
A traditional dish from Ushimado – hearty fisherman’s soup over rice

About Sailor’s Jabujabu
Sailor’s Jabujabu (水夫のじゃぶじゃぶ) is a local dish from the Ushimado area, believed to have originated as a meal for ship captains long ago. This warming dish features minced whole-tongue sole fish (geta), simmered with daikon radish, green onions, carrots, and other ingredients. The flavorful broth is then generously poured over steaming hot rice.
Once a quick and comforting winter meal, it gradually became a beloved home-cooked dish. Today, you can enjoy Sailor’s Jabujabu at regional events or purchase retort-packed versions as souvenirs from local shops in the area.
