Hiruzen Okowa

About Hiruzen Okowa

Hiruzen Okowa (蒜山おこわ, Hiruzen okowa) is a traditional dish from the Hiruzen region in northern Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. This hearty dish is a staple at local festivals and celebrations. It originated in the 1950s when locals sought to create a mixed sticky rice dish using ingredients from the region. Its roots trace back to Daisen okowa, said to have been accidentally created when chirashi sushi toppings were mixed into cooked red rice.

Hiruzen Okowa features a luxurious combination of glutinous rice steamed with chicken, chestnuts, burdock root, carrots, konjac, adzuki beans, and a variety of seasonal wild vegetables sourced from the Hiruzen area. These ingredients are seasoned with soy sauce and mirin, creating a flavorful and satisfying dish. Packed with nutrition, the chicken provides high-quality protein, while chestnuts and adzuki beans offer dietary fiber and B vitamins.

This sticky rice dish is traditionally served during events like the post-rice planting ceremony known as "Shiromite," as well as at festivals and celebratory gatherings, making it a beloved part of the local culture. It is also available at regional events and restaurants, standing as a proud symbol of Hiruzen’s culinary heritage.

Hiruzen Okowa can be enjoyed as a main dish or as a delightful accompaniment. It pairs particularly well with Okayama’s local sake, such as "Gozen-shu" and "Daiten Shiragiku" junmai sake. The sweetness of the glutinous rice and the umami of the ingredients enhance the nuanced flavors of these traditional Japanese rice wines.

With its first bite, Hiruzen Okowa offers a taste of the rich nature and history of Hiruzen. Its deep and comforting flavors tell the story of the region’s traditions and the warmth of its people.
