The story began around 1950, when people connected with the U.S. Navy stationed in Sasebo shared a recipe. It was later adapted to suit Japanese tastes, and the burger has since become a local specialty.

A Sasebo Burger is defined as being handmade at the restaurant, never prepared in advance, and served at an establishment in Sasebo City.

Sasebo Burgers can now be found throughout Japan, including in Tokyo and Osaka. Strictly speaking, however, only burgers bought at restaurants within Sasebo City are considered authentic Sasebo Burgers.
