Henba Mochi
A beloved traditional treat of Ise, cherished by locals and visitors alike
Henba Mochi introduction
Henba Mochi (へんば餅) is a rice cake delicacy crafted and sold by the long-established Japanese confectionery store Henbaya Shoten in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. These round, flat rice cakes are made from rice flour and have a uniquely soft and chewy texture. The golden-brown surface on both sides adds a fragrant, toasty aroma, pairing beautifully with the smooth, mildly sweet red bean paste filling that melts in your mouth. The name “Henba Mochi” originates from a historical resting point called "Henbajo," where samurai would stop to rest and turn their horses around during their journey. This fascinating connection to the past makes Henba Mochi a rare and historically meaningful sweet treat.
