Ribbonfish
Arita City’s Pride: Japan’s Leading Ribbonfish Catch
Ribbonfish introduction
Wakayama Prefecture is one of Japan's top producers of ribbonfish (太刀魚, Tachiuo), with its waters in the Kii Channel providing an ideal fishing ground. In particular, Arita City, home to the Minoshima Fishing Port, celebrates ribbonfish as a local culinary staple. While ribbonfish is commonly enjoyed grilled with salt or simmered, in Wakayama, where exceptional freshness is guaranteed, sashimi and ribbonfish sushi are also popular choices. Its delicate white flesh is mild, tender, and visually appealing, exuding the elegance of a premium seafood delicacy. In summer, the peak season for ribbonfish, you can find it on the menu in most restaurants across the region. Beyond its exquisite taste, ribbonfish is highly nutritious, rich in oleic acid, vitamin D, and essential minerals, making it recognized for its potential health benefits such as aiding in recovery from fatigue.
