Ryombo Mochi
Beloved by Satsuma Samurai, Ryombo Mochi
Ryombo Mochi introduction
Ryombo Mochi (両棒餅) is a traditional sweet from Kagoshima made from rice flour dumplings skewered on two sticks and generously coated with a thick, sweet soy sauce glaze. The name "Jambo" is believed to originate from a mispronunciation of "Ryombo," and the two skewers are said to symbolize the swords carried by samurai—a long katana and a short wakizashi. Ryombo Mochi has a long and fascinating history, dating back to the Nanboku-chō period (14th century), originating in Taniyama, now part of modern-day Kagoshima City. During the Edo period, it became a favored offering from the Taniyama region to the Shimazu clan, the lords of Satsuma. Over time, the treat gained popularity and spread throughout the Iso area, becoming a cherished delicacy in Kagoshima.
