About Hana Rakkyo
Hana Rakkyo (花らっきょう, Hana rakkyo) from Mikuni's Sanrihama area in Fukui Prefecture is grown along the scenic sand dunes of the Sea of Japan coastline.
The fine, clay-rich sand of Sanrihama provides the perfect conditions for cultivating these crisp and tender pickled shallots. Known for their small size and gem-like appearance, Hana Rakkyo is a specialty of Mikuni, uniquely nurtured over two years in the expansive dunes facing the Sea of Japan.
Come late October to early November, the Sanrihama hillsides bloom with delicate pale pink flowers from the shallot plants. These tiny, jewel-like pickled shallots make for delightful souvenirs, cherished for their charm and exquisite taste.
