Pawpaw
The rare fruit of Ehime: the "Pawpaw"
About Pawpaw
Pawpaw (ポポー, Pawpaw) is a fruit native to North America, belonging to the Annonaceae family. Its appearance resembles an akebi (chocolate vine fruit), while its flesh and seeds are similar to those of a persimmon, which has given it the nickname "Akebi-Gaki" in Japan.
Due to its thin skin, the fruit is difficult to transport and therefore rarely found in markets. It is often only available at local coastal farm stands, earning it the title of a "rare fruit."
Pawpaw has a rich, tropical flavor that tastes like a blend of banana and mango. One of the best ways to enjoy it is to scoop out the creamy flesh with a spoon. It’s also delightful when added to smoothies, ice cream, or puddings for a delicious tropical twist.
