Detchi Yokan
Soft bamboo aroma, chewy texture, and rustic sweetness—relive the traditional taste of Shiga’s specialty, Detchi Yokan
About Detchi Yokan
Detchi Yokan (丁稚羊羹, Detchi youkan) is a traditional specialty from Shiga Prefecture. This unique type of yokan, a steamed bean jelly, is made by blending sweetened azuki bean paste with wheat flour. What sets it apart is its wrapping—encased in fragrant bamboo leaves that enhance its natural charm.
The name "Detchi Yokan" is said to have originated from its affordability for young apprentices (called "detchi") or from the custom of these apprentices bringing the treat as a gift to their masters and senior staff.
Available year-round, it can be found in specialty stores, supermarkets, and local shops. Recognized as an important part of Shiga’s food heritage, it was designated as a "Shiga Food Cultural Asset" in 1998, preserving its historical and cultural significance. Enjoy a timeless taste with every bite!
