Keihan Chicken Rice
Amami's beloved dish praised by Emperor Showa
About Keihan Chicken Rice
Keihan Chicken Rice (鶏飯, Keihan) is a traditional dish from the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, reminiscent of ochazuke—a comforting rice dish with broth poured over it.
This hearty dish is made by topping steamed rice with shredded steamed chicken breast, shiitake mushrooms, thinly sliced egg strips, green onions, pickled papaya, and various other ingredients. Hot chicken broth is then poured over the dish, making it a warm and soothing meal. With its light and refreshing flavor, it’s perfect for those sweltering summer days when your appetite needs a little encouragement. A true taste of the tropical islands!
