Sasamaki Anpu
Yomogi-flavored fresh wheat gluten wrapped around smooth red bean paste
About Sasamaki Anpu
Sasamaki Anpu (笹巻あんぷ) is a traditional sweet deeply tied to the history of Kōyasan. Its roots date back to the Yamato period, when monks are said to have brought the technique for making wheat gluten from China.
This delicacy features soft, chewy fresh gluten mixed with yomogi (Japanese mugwort) and filled with smooth red bean paste. It is then wrapped in fragrant bamboo leaves. Known for its delicate sweetness and pleasant texture, Sasamaki Anpu is not only a popular treat for a stroll through nature but also a perfect souvenir for loved ones waiting back home.
The flavor is enhanced by the aromatic combination of bamboo leaves and yomogi kneaded into the gluten, with their subtle hint of bitterness balancing perfectly with the fine, smooth sweetness of the red bean paste. It's a harmonious taste of tradition and craftsmanship.
