Kure City in Hiroshima Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is known as a place with deep connections to the Japanese Navy. In 1889, the Kure Naval District was established, leading to the development of urban infrastructure such as naval shipyards, hospitals, and water systems. The city flourished as one of the most prominent naval ports in Asia and home to Japan’s largest naval establishments. "Naval Gourmet" refers to dishes served on ships constructed at or belonging to the Kure Naval District, as well as recipes passed down from the former Imperial Japanese Navy, which are carefully recreated in Kure City. The most iconic example is "Naval Curry." Traditionally, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force had a custom of eating curry every Friday to maintain a sense of the weekly cycle while at sea. For them, curry was not just a meal but a comforting tradition marking the end of a workweek.
