Seared Seki Horse Mackerel & Seki Mackerel Sashimi
Fresh fish from the pristine waters of the Bungo Channel
Seared Seki Horse Mackerel & Seki Mackerel Sashimi introduction
Seki Horse Mackerel and Seki Mackerel (関アジ・関サバ, Seki Aji & Seki Saba) are premium fish caught in the Bungo Channel, off the coast of Saganoseki, Oita Prefecture. These delicacies are renowned across Japan for their exceptional flavor. The secret to their exquisite taste lies in the unique geographical features of the Bungo Channel—also known as the Hoyou Strait—where the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. The water temperature here remains stable year-round, creating an ideal habitat teeming with diverse marine life that serves as their food source. What sets Seki Aji and Seki Saba apart is their lifestyle. While most horse mackerels and mackerels are migratory, the perfect living conditions here deter them from leaving, allowing them to develop firm, lean flesh through active movement in the channel’s strong currents. These rare "residential" fish, known as “Settsuki,” are a gift of these extraordinary waters and their rich ecosystem.
