Tama Konnyaku
The beloved daily snack of Yamagata locals
Tama Konnyaku introduction
Tama Konnyaku (玉こんにゃく, tama konnyaku) is a cherished soul food of Yamagata Prefecture, affectionately called “Tama-kon” by the locals. As Yamagata has long been known for its production of konjac yam, this unique dish has become a staple in their food culture. True to its name, Tama Konnyaku consists of round, ball-shaped konjac approximately 3cm in diameter. You’ll often find them skewered and sold at tourist attractions, festivals, and other gatherings. While konjac boards and shredded konjac are common across Japan, the distinct Tama Konnyaku remains a specialty of Yamagata. A popular way to enjoy it involves simmering the konjac balls in soy sauce for about 15 minutes and serving them with a dab of spicy mustard. For many locals, this is a comforting dish they enjoy nearly every day.
