About Sesame Tofu

Sesame Tofu (ごま豆腐, Goma tofu) is a beloved culinary tradition of Eiheiji, a magnificent and historic Zen temple in Eiheiji Town, Fukui Prefecture.

With an 800-year history and numerous significant cultural properties, Eiheiji attracts over 500,000 visitors annually, making it one of Fukui's top tourist destinations. The surrounding temple town is always lively, with its many shops and restaurants offering visitors a taste of local flavors.

Among these, Sesame Tofu holds a special place as a quintessential dish of Eiheiji. While it’s often paired with soy sauce and wasabi elsewhere, Eiheiji tradition calls for enjoying it with miso. The creamy texture of the tofu, rich sesame aroma, and the deep, savory flavor of miso combine harmoniously to create a truly delightful treat.
