Chicken Nanban
A delightful chicken dish with sweet vinegar and tartar sauce
About Chicken Nanban
Chicken Nanban (チキン南蛮, Chikin nanban) is a renowned local specialty that’s loved across Japan.
This dish features crispy, deep-fried chicken coated in a flavorful sweet and tangy vinegar sauce while still hot, then topped generously with creamy tartar sauce for a perfect balance of flavors. The juicy chicken, combined with the richness of tartar and the zesty kick of the vinegar glaze, pairs wonderfully with a bowl of rice—it's hard to stop eating!
The now widely popular tartar sauce topping style of Chicken Nanban is said to have been invented in 1956 by Yoshimitsu Kai, the founder of "Ogura," a dining establishment.
Miyazaki Prefecture, where chicken farming is abundant, is famous for a variety of chicken dishes, including chicken wings, sashimi, and charcoal-grilled chicken.
