Chosengame
A traditional confectionery from Kumamoto, "Chosengame"
About Chosengame
Chosengame (朝鮮飴, Chosengame) is Kumamoto's oldest and most traditional confectionery. Originally known as "Choseiame" or "Higoame," it earned its current name when Kiyomasa Kato, a feudal lord, brought it along during the Korean campaigns. Praised as a tasty and durable preserved food, it began to be affectionately called "Chosengame."
Despite the name "ame," meaning candy, Chosengame is made by kneading glutinous rice, malt syrup, and sugar into a treat with a soft, mochi-like texture and a gently sweet flavor that spreads pleasantly in the mouth. Its delightful combination of the chewy elasticity of glutinous rice and the simple, rustic sweetness of sugar makes it a crowd favorite. Chosengame's mild sweetness and nostalgic taste capture the essence of traditional Japanese sweets.
