Yangome
A sweet and fragrant taste of Chiba, a symbol of gratitude and tradition

About Yangome
Yangome (ヤンゴメ, Yangome) is a heartwarming traditional dish from the southern region of Chiba Prefecture, on the Boso Peninsula. Made by cooking toasted rice and adzuki beans with sugar, this dish resembles sekihan (red rice) in appearance but offers a unique texture with its lightly crunchy toasted rice and a gentle sweetness.
Traditionally enjoyed during Obon and celebrations of a bountiful harvest, families gather around Yangome to honor their ancestors. During these occasions, they perform rituals involving welcoming or sending off spirits by chanting "Yan-gome kui-kui, mizu nomi-nomi, kono akari de gozei rashai," which roughly means inviting the spirits to partake in the food and drink under the light. In these moving ceremonies, offerings of rice and water are made towards burning straw, symbolizing deep respect and love for those who have passed.
Yangome’s origins trace back to the resourceful use of leftover rice husks after planting season. Nowadays, it’s a cherished dish deeply rooted in the traditions of Chiba, making appearances at special events and festive occasions. With its harmonious balance of nutty aroma and sweetness, Yangome carries on the rich spirit of Chiba’s culture and history even today.
