Manganji Peppers (Manganji Sweet Peppers)
Large, thick, and sweet peppers born in the Maizuru region
About Manganji Peppers (Manganji Sweet Peppers)
Manganji Peppers (万願寺とうがらし, Manganji tōgarashi) originated from the Manganji district in the outskirts of Maizuru, located in northern Kyoto Prefecture.
Though part of the chili pepper family, these peppers are not spicy. Instead, they offer a natural sweetness and a hearty bite. Their thick, tender flesh contains few seeds, making them easy to enjoy.
A classic preparation is simply grilling them and topping them with bonito flakes and soy sauce. They also pair wonderfully with various dishes, being versatile for stir-fries, simmered dishes, tempura, and more. A relatively new addition to Japanese produce, these peppers have quickly risen in popularity, thanks to their delicious flavor and unique shape, becoming a flagship item of Kyoto's renowned "brand vegetables."
